The Nordland bunad has on several occasions been named Norway’s most beautiful traditional costume. It is available in two main colors: green and blue. Growing up in Northern Norway, many people have heard the myth of the Nordland bunad colors.

According to the story, the green fabric represents the inland, meaning people from inland areas should wear green. The blue fabric, on the other hand, is said to represent the coast and should therefore be worn by people from coastal areas. In reality, the story is quite different.
The Nordland bunad was originally designed in green fabric, inspired by an old embroidery piece. However, due to a shortage of green fabric at the time, the first prototype was sewn in blue instead.
Today both colors are produced, and people from both inland and coastal regions may wear whichever color they prefer.
